OH NO GIRLS ARE LIKING THINGS FOR REASONS THAT I THINK ARE FRIVOLOUS AND DUMB THEREFORE THEY ARE MAKING MY ENTIRE GENDER LOOK BAD BECAUSE IT’S NOT LIKE THERE’S ANY KIND OF GROSS SEXIST DOUBLE STANDARD GOING ON THERE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT
OF COURSE NOT
IT’S JUST THAT THOSE DELUSIONAL SLUTS WHO ONLY PLAY THE GAMES FOR THE SAKE OF THE GRAPHICS AND CHARACTERS ARE DESTROYING MY ABILITY TO ENJOY THE GAME
BECAUSE I HATE FUN
AND PROBABLY KITTENS AND RAINBOWS TOO
So, hypothetically, if I took sexy pictures of myself posing with a gameboy or something, does that automatically disqualify me from being a gamer? Because, you know, it’s entirely possible to like games and like posting sexy pics to turn people on. These things aren’t mutually exclusive.
You know, it almost sounds like this- liking the games for the cute guys and secret romance- is a matter of liking the games for girly reasons. And obviously people who like things for girly reasons should just be playing Cooking Mama or Barbie Dreamhouse games, because there’s no room for girliness among fans of Assassin’s Creed. Because girliness is gross, amirite? That’s totally not a matter of condemning the feminine as less than and inferior to the masculine, no, absolutely not. Mmm, I love the smell of misogyny in the morning.
And while, yes, all those parody pictures there were going around a while back of people posing with things in the style of that girl with the Xbox controller were pretty funny, the underlying message there is that it’s not okay to play games and be sexual. You have to be one or the other: give up your hobbies, or give up this particular expression of your sexuality and femininity. There’s another phrase for the act of castigating women who want to transgress what are considered acceptable and appropriate boundaries of sexual expression: slut shaming.
The whole concept of the “girl gamer” (quotation marks included) is offensive to me. Because it’s only ever thrown around as a term to shame people for not playing games for the “right” reasons, or for using games as a way to hook up. And that’s fucking disgraceful. I’m not offended by this post because I feel like it’s attacking me for playing the games, I’m offended by this post for treating people who play the games for “shallow” reasons as a problem.
Fuck that, and fuck whoever posted this. Everyone can enjoy games for whatever reason they want, and there is nothing wrong with that. The people who like the games for Ezio’s ass in his Florentine Nobleman outfit aren’t any less fans of the series than the people who play them so they can get mad at the historical inaccuracies. Or the ones who play them for the fucking badass kill sequences- which is why I first got into the series, because I’m twisted and bloodthirsty. Why is it so important for us to create some kind of hierarchy based on whether or not someone is too stereotypically girly or slutty to be allowed in?
If some people want to turn fannishness of the games into some kind of clubhouse with a “NO GURLS ALLOWED” sign on the door, fine. You can keep your clubhouse; the rest of us will build our own clubhouse. A better one.
with blackjack, and hookersWhere it doesn’t fucking matter why you play the games, only that you do.I’m a “girl gamer.” I like my games to have cute guys and secret romances and badass kill sequences, because my likes are not defined by any single thing. And even if they were, so fucking what? Don’t hate the playa, hate the game, as they say- people who play the games for “girly” reasons don’t make you look bad- it’s the sexist assumption that there’s something wrong with playing the games for those reasons that does.
bolded for emphasis
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? Assassin’s Creed is one of the best video games I have ever played. I don’t even give a shit and a half what the characters look like. Not apologizing for my genitalia. Fuck you.
Frankly, what strikes me as stupidest about this is my first thought was, “Because straight male gamers never play a game for the attractiveness of a female character, right?”
I mean, really. That’s why women in games are typically hardly dressed at all, right? Because male gamers have no interest in looking at them?
Yeah, okay.
I fucking hate that as a lady geek, I constantly have to “prove” that I’m “enough” of a geek. Well, fuck you.
Okay, boys, put your controllers down and listen. You all have been working so hard to keep “gaming” as a boys only club, that it’s turned into the Real Scotsman argument. You have whittled down real “games,” until you’re left with Call of Duty and Halo (which women play too). I have never met a game that you guys didn’t play, except like Barbie’s Hair Salon (which has a fan base of 6 year olds).
And then, us girl gamers (which I use because I fucking like alliteration) have to play the “real gamer” argument, where we get to lie about liking The Sims, and Mario Kart, because we know that will be used against us, despite the fact that we know a lot of boy gamers love those games.
We can either put up with your bullshit or leave the hobby. And then you all have the gall to whine about never being able to find a geeky gamer girl (woohoo more alliteration). You tell us you don’t want us here, unless it’s for sex, and then if we’re sexy, you tell us you don’t want us here. We can’t fucking win. Either stop bitching about women playing video games, or stop bitching about how few of us women play video games. You can’t have both.
As for romances being girly? Really? I’ll let you in on a secret, guys like that shit too. Really, they just don’t fucking admit it, because of you’re faux manly jackassitude. You’re just playing a video game, it doesn’t make you more of a man.
guys don’t play games to look at the characters and enjoy it, really? Tomb Raider. End of argument.
Dude. My FAVOURITE part of the third game was to recruit female assassins. Sisterhood ftw. Fuck cheating to get it. And...
look at the last paragraph for a tl;dr
See, male privilege totally still exists
Reblogging for EPIC commentary. Thank you.
